Security will be tightened in Yangon in five days of this traditional New Year festival which starts 12 April in the wake of sectarian conflicts, Yangon security minister Col Tin Win told Union Daily.
CCTV cameras will be fixed in water throwing pandals, says the minister.
“We won’t allow such (Meiktila) violence to spread in Yangon,” he said.
Owners of water throwing pandals complained over expensiveness of security guards in Thingyan period.
This year’s Thingyan will mark the end of 1374 Myanmar era and the ringing in of the year 1375.
